Background of the Study
Cultural exchange plays a pivotal role in shaping linguistic practices, particularly among diaspora communities. Nigerian diaspora populations, especially those of Yoruba descent, experience a blend of indigenous phonetic features and influences from host cultures. This study examines how cultural exchange affects Nigerian phonetics by focusing on Yoruba speakers in diaspora communities. Traditional Yoruba phonetic elements—such as tonal variation, stress patterns, and distinctive articulation—are often modified when speakers adapt to new linguistic environments (Akinyele, 2023). Interaction with different language systems and cultural norms may lead to the retention, transformation, or loss of these phonetic features. Through acoustic analysis, interviews, and participant observation, this research documents changes in pronunciation and intonation patterns among Yoruba diaspora speakers. The study also explores how community dynamics, intergenerational transmission, and integration into multicultural settings contribute to phonetic adaptation. The findings will provide insights into the broader impact of cultural exchange on language evolution and identity formation among diaspora populations (Babatunde, 2024; Chisom, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident influence of cultural exchange on language, there is limited research on how Yoruba phonetics are affected in diaspora communities. Current literature often focuses on vocabulary or grammatical change, with insufficient attention to phonetic adaptations (Olu, 2023). This gap hampers understanding of how interaction with host cultures may alter indigenous phonetic traits. Such changes could impact the preservation of linguistic heritage and affect communication within diaspora groups. Without systematic study, the factors driving phonetic evolution in multicultural settings remain unclear. This study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing phonetic modifications in Yoruba speakers abroad, offering empirical data on the impact of cultural exchange (Akinyele, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document phonetic features in Yoruba diaspora speech.
  2. To analyze the impact of cultural exchange on these phonetic patterns.
  3. To assess the implications of phonetic change for language identity.

Research Questions

  1. What phonetic features are altered in Yoruba speech among diaspora communities?
  2. How does cultural interaction influence these phonetic adaptations?
  3. What are the implications for maintaining linguistic heritage?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores how cultural exchange affects Yoruba phonetics in diaspora communities, contributing to our understanding of language evolution in multicultural contexts. The insights will aid linguists, educators, and cultural organizations in preserving indigenous phonetic traits while embracing necessary adaptations (Akinyele, 2023; Chisom, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing the impact of cultural exchange on Yoruba phonetics in diaspora communities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonetics: The study of speech sounds and their production.
  • Cultural Exchange: The process by which different cultures interact and influence each other.
